Efficient Kitchen Layout - Blend Function Into Your Dream Kitchen

The work triangle is a simple set of rules used in kitchen design. While our kitchens are getting remodeled, updated and more complicated, the tried and true methods of efficiency still seem to work. Work Triangle rules go something like this:
Study the movement between your refrigerator, cooking surface and sink
Each leg should be between 4 and 11 feet
No more than 30 feet total
No leg should cross through casual traffic flow.
Make sure your dishwasher is one step or less from the sink. Is there adequate upper cabinet storage near the dishwasher. Ask your installer/designer to reverse door hinges if necessary to avoid reaching around open doors. Don't let yourself get trapped into a corner while the dishwasher door is down.
But, there is so much more to efficient designing that most homeowners fail to consider. Consider your current kitchen layout. Is there enough storage space? (food, dishes, pots and pans) Enough counter top or work surface? (food prep, small appliances, open storage) Is there one specific area that you are constantly colliding with other people? Or banging your hip on a countertop? Do you have to reach around an open cabinet door to access contents.

Blind base cabinets can be incredibly hard to use. Although better than voided space, these corner cabinets will usually require that you get on your hands and knees to reach the back items. Even the easy reach and lazy susan cabinets are not as friendly as you might think, so think twice before designing this expense into your kitchen. The cabinets above your refrigerator are also to be used for the rarely used items. Even the 24 inch deep wall cabinets are not to be considered for heavy use items.

Roll out trays are a great investment for your base cabinets. Consider how hard it is to access an item that is stored on the back of a fixed shelf. Again, you don't want to have to get on your hands and knees to dig through your stuff. Roll out trays are relatively easy to install and considerably cheaper than going overboard on the "all drawer" base cabinets.

Another handy bit of hardware is the base cabinet trash can holder. Available at most home stores and DIY friendly to install. A behind the door trash can can be functionally sanitary and integrate beautifully into your design.

Watch your designer if the are trying to put your refrigerator up against a side wall. Many newer appliances are designed with extra deep storage bins in the doors such that a full 180 degree door swing may be required to access the center drawers or internal roll outs

Also, try to avoid putting your microwave oven above your shoulder height. I know most designs like to put the microwave over the range but consider how dangerous it can be for you or your kids.to remove hot liquids. The countertop or even below the counter is a much more user friendly location.

Bottom units and drawer units

While there are bottom units without drawers, there are only drawers in bottom units. Drawers can either be spread across with each cupboard having a drawer above it, or they can have an entire panel dedicated to a set of drawers. This has become the more popular option in recent years.

Top units

A top unit is simply a row of reinforced cupboards for additional shelving above lower cupboards. These carry a great deal of weight and need to be designed and installed properly to ensure that they carry it correctly.

Complete units

This unit is usually a free standing unit that eliminates the need for installation completely. The top cupboards are narrower and shorter preventing it from being top heavy while the bottom cupboards are higher and provide a working surface and back surface.

By choosing an appropriate design and finish and then thoughtfully placing your kitchen units you will easily be able to create that perfect ambiance for the busiest room in the home.

In addition to size, there are many varieties to choose from such as the butt, carving, corner, and framing chisels. Remeber: study your plans and do the reseach before choosing a specific tool.

As your project advances, you may realize that the tools you have are not sufficient for a particular task. You may eventually realize the need for more specialized tools such a V-tool, a veiner, or a router. Remember that there is a type of tool for every type of cut you can imagine; just do the research and you'll find that special tool you need. Some Basic House Cleaning Rules

All homes need some basic rules to make sure that everything runs smoothly and (ideally) so that one person doesn't end up doing more than their fair share of the work. Not all homes have the rules written down, but judging by the amount of quarrels about who does what (or who hasn't done what), writing them down wouldn't hurt. Here's a sample:

* If you're not actually watching the TV/listening to the radio, switch it off at the wall. Standby still uses electricity.

* Turn off the light if you're the last one to leave the room.

* If you spilled it, dropped the crumbs, smeared it, etc., you clean it up, preferably as soon as possible, because things get harder to clean if you leave them for when your regular cleaner comes for the.

* If you want it washed, put it in the laundry basket.

* Rinse your plates, knives and cups before putting them in the dishwasher.

* Make your bed as soon as you get out of it - or strip the sheets off ready for washing, if needed. You have the option of getting dressed first.

* Only fill the kettle as much as you need if you're going to boil it, but make sure that the element is covered (which probably means that you'll have enough hot water for two people, so why not see who else wants a drink while you're at it?).

* Turn the element off once you've finished cooking. No exceptions - the oven is not a form of home heating.

* Take your shoes off at the door - this avoids tracking mud and extra bits through the house. And put them on the shoe rack, if you have one, rather than leaving them scattered all around the doorstep for the next person to trip over.

* Put things away rather than just down in a corner. Otherwise, you'll waste quite a few minutes a day looking for things that weren't put away properly.

* Don't throw food scraps in the rubbish bin - put them in the compost bin or in the doggy bowl.

* Don't stand there with the fridge door wide open considering what you might like to eat. Think about what you want before you open the door.

* If you use the last of something, write it down on the list, or at least let the person in charge of doing the groceries know.

* If you used the last bit of toilet paper, put a new roll on.

* Rinse out tins, stick the lid inside them and crush them before putting them into the recycling bin.

* Take jelly beans, bits of paper and coins out of your pockets before putting them into the wash. Removing underpants from inside trousers is also a nice touch.

* Wash your hands before eating, preparing food, after handling animals, after going to the toilet, after handling noxious substances and after doing dirty jobs like gardening and house cleaning.

* If you're just scribbling down a list or doodling, don't use the good paper - use the GOOS (good on one side) paper.

* Don't run the tap while you're doing your teeth.

4. Consider extra costs. City residents may have to pay delivery charges at big-box retail stores. "USA Today" writer Theresa Howard describes urban shopping in her article, "Big-Box Stores Squeeze into Big Apple." Howard says city traffic and the lack of parking "make delivery a New York staple."

5. Comparison shop. End cap displays -- displays at the end of the aisles -- are a way to feature products. Some shoppers think end cap products are always sale priced and this may not be true. The only way to find out is to comparison shop.

6. Shop at low traffic times. According to an article, "Impact of Big-Box Stores on Traffic," published on the Big Box Toolkit Web site, big-box retail stores generate volumes of traffic. "The larger the store, the larger the geographic area from which it pulls," the article says, and this means more cars. You can avoid getting stuck in traffic by shopping early in the morning or afternoon.

7. Use coupons. Big-box retailers offer week-end specials and sales coupons. Check newspaper ads for these coupons. Also check the big-box store bulletin board displays and pocket displays for coupons and product rebates.

8. Tap technology. The Super Walmart Web site has store maps on it that may be purchased for a small fee. This Web site also contains information about Simply Shopping software, a program for shoppers to buy. The software is store specific and updated regularly.

Make Space With a Kitchen Cart

If you love to cook, it can come at a high cost. You know the score. Every great dish out there seems to need a special ingredient or a special pan. Worse, some even want you to buy specialized appliances that you may just use once or twice, but which have since become indispensable.

Eventually, the cupboards and drawers runneth over. While you could cut down on the number of spatulas you have or maybe get rid of the Panini maker, it's far easier to make space with a kitchen cart, getting the little used things off your kitchen counter and out of your cupboards so you aren't always dreading having to find your paring knife or candy thermometer.

If you want to make space with a kitchen cart, know that there are an endless variety of them out there. From large carts that can serve as a kitchen island to smaller models that will tuck nicely in a corner when not in use, there's a kitchen cart for nearly any chef.

If you have a lot of favorite knives, you can start to make space with a kitchen cart by picking up a model with a built in knife caddy on the side. There you can keep all your knives ready to go, using the cart's surface for preparing meals. Many come with a built-in chopping block or you can use a cutting board instead.
Down below, you can use the built-in cupboards to make space with a kitchen cart, storing your less used appliances or specialty cookware. Some models even have a thoughtful tray edge around the top where you can store your favorite seasonings rubs and herbs.

In fact, you can use your kitchen cart as a mobile prep station. To make space with a kitchen cart when entertaining outdoors, use the cart to do all your prep work, then roll it out to the barbecue where it can serve as a temporary cooking area. When you're all done, load up the barbecue utensils and other dirty dishes and roll it all back inside, right up to the sink.

If you are short of counter space in a smaller home or apartment, you can use a kitchen cart to add counter space. You can put it in a corner as a permanent fixture. On the top you can put your microwave, which as we all know can be a real counter hog. Or you can put a toaster and your coffee maker there, two items you only use regularly in the morning, but not necessarily at dinner time when you need a little more counter area to work with.

You can also set up a kitchen cart to be a specialty cart. For example, you can make more space with a kitchen cart by loading it up with your baking goods - canisters of flower and sugar, rolling pins, pastry boards, etc. Whenever you get in the mood to do a little baking, simply roll the cart out and get to work. Everything is in one place, just waiting for you to bake up a storm for the holidays or just for the heck of it. If your cart has a cabinet, use it to store all your cookie sheets and pans. This provides you with even more added convenience, since you don't have to try to remember where you stored them after the last time you used them.

As you can see, a kitchen cart can be one of the best investments you can make for your home. It can give you more space to work with, keep all your similar cooking and baking items in one place and free up a little precious counter space, allowing you to move some of your appliances to the cart instead.

Customer Service Flops at a Restaurant - When Something Was Going So Well, Why Change It?

Before I get started on this article, I'd like to say goodbye to the phrase, at the end of the day, because, at the end of the day, the phrase is still there, taunting me. I don't want to say it anymore and I'm sick of hearing it, quite frankly. Lately, whenever I hear someone use that phrase, I almost burst out laughing. And I don't want to do that. That would be rude. So, instead, I stifle the laugh and work hard to not smile. If I smiled they would wonder why I'm smiling. They know they didn't say anything funny. (Is she laughing at me? Why, yes, I am, because, at the end of the day, I'm sick and tired of that phrase.) So I don't even smile.

Okay, back to Customer Service Flops at a Restaurant!

On a Saturday, I wanted to get out of the house to do some writing, to get a change of atmosphere and to perhaps be inspired by different surroundings.

I headed to Borders Books, but they didn't have enough tables; all were taken. (They've had room for more tables for a few years, but haven't figured that out yet! Or maybe they have, but they don't want more tables to clean.)

So I went to a place called Corner Bakery. This is an old-fashioned-inspired place owned by a local chain of restaurants. While the other restaurants owned by the chain are sit-down places, Corner Bakery is a walk-up style restaurant where you order your food at a counter, pay for it, and then take it to your table. All they keep on the tables is salt and pepper, so customers have to get everything else they need from a service area. The service area has ice, a soda machine, iced tea, water, napkins, cutlery, sugar, milk, and anything else you would need (except, of course, for salt and pepper, because, as I said, that's all you find on their tables).

I asked the woman taking my order if they served their tea in pots, and she replied that she didn't know what I meant. So I asked another employee, who said they did not have teapots. (Border's does!) They knew I was there for here (not to go), but my tea was served in a take-out cup. I also ordered something to eat. They handed everything to me over the cash register. I set it down while I put my change back into my wallet, and then I looked around for a tray. (I recalled using a tray every other time I was there.) I didn't see any trays.

So I asked the two employees behind the counter if they had any trays. They both said no. Hmm. What happened to the trays? Well, one employee said, when they remodeled the kitchen and ordering area, they got rid of the trays.

So I had to pick up the items I purchased, bring them to a table, then go back to the service area to get flatware, napkins, etc., and bring that back to the table.

Being a tea person who likes to have her tea just so, next, I brought my take-out tea cup to the service area for milk and sugar. After pouring some milk in the cup and breaking open a sugar packet, I deposited the used sugar packet in the garbage slot conveniently located on the counter of the service area (just like Starbucks!). Then I grabbed a spoon, stirred the tea, and looked for a basket or container to place the used spoon. I didn't find any such container, so I shrugged my shoulders (in my mind, anyway) and left the spoon on the counter of the service area (not like Starbucks!).

Then it was back to the table again. After a couple minutes I realized that the tea was still extremely hot, and I wanted a spoon. (Of course! I should have carried that spoon back to the table with me!). As I got up from the table to go back to the service area, my hip hit the table, spilling sugary tea on the table and on the pen with which I'm writing. Great! So along with the spoon, I grabbed more napkins to clean up the mess.

A tray would have made the whole experience so much easier! What do people who dine at Corner Bakery do when they have their young children with them? Tote the kids back and forth between the front counter, their table, and the service area, carrying as much as they can hold, until they get everything they need?

So my message to Corner Bakery is: Make your customers' lives easier when they come to your restaurant: bring back the trays!

Adapting Recipes For Waterless Cookware

Many of us want to cook healthy meals that are both pleasing to the eye as well as to the palate. There are literally thousands of cookbooks on the market that help us with that daily task of meal planning and preparation. Yet when it comes to waterless and greaseless cooking, there are very few cookbooks available. To enjoy a variety of recipes and receive the benefits of cooking without water and added fats, you will need to adapt recipes. The easiest way to do that is to know and trust your cookware. Three things are important in this process.

One of the benefits of quality stainless steel waterless cookware is the way it conducts heat-on low. One common mistake is to use a heat setting that is too high. Waterless cookware has a flat bottom comprised of 5, 7, 9 or possibly 12 elements (layers). This bottom of a waterless cooking pan needs to be flat to provide for even heat distribution. The special design of the encapsulated bottom of each stainless steel pot provides strength and rigidity that prevents warping. It also eliminates hot spots that may burn food. Heat is distributed evenly in all directions.

Understand Waterless Cooking

Every time you lift the cover moisture is allowed to escape. This can result in burned foods and/or extra cooking time. Always use the correct size pan. Vegetables should fill or almost fill the pan. If there is too much air inside the pan, the vapor seal will not form, and vegetables will burn. Many foods, like fruits and vegetables, have their own moisture. You can retain the natural moisture by cooking with low heat, the cover on, and the vent closed. There is an exception however. Dried foods, such as rice, pasta, or dried beans will have to additional moisture added to rehydrate.

Enjoy Greaseless Cooking
You really can prepare your foods without added oils and fats. Remember, you are cooking on a surgical stainless steel surface. To prepare meats, preheat the pan on medium (on some stoves medium high might be necessary) heat until water drops "dance" when they are sprinkled in the pan. Place the meat in the pan. It will immediately begin to sear, temporarily sticking to the surface. You should not try to move them until they are ready to turn. After 4 or 5 minutes, lift the corner of the meat. Do not force. The meat should release itself. When that side is seared, turn and cook on the other side for additional 4 or 5 minutes. Most meats, chicken, chops, and fish have natural fats and oils, so you don't need to add them. There are some who believe that cooking meats in stainless steel, rather than nonstick, pans will result in stuck-on foods and therefore messy cleanups afterward. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. True, meats will stick during the searing process, but with the help of a spatula, these particles will easily come loose later in the cooking process.

Eggs, however, have no natural oil. You must add vegetable cooking spray to the pan or use a small amount of butter or margarine.

I have included a recipe for Chicken Pot Pie that I have adapted to waterless cookware. Once you get used to following the above principles, you will realize cooking with waterless cookware needn't be a scary, uncertain experiment but rather an enjoyable culinary experience. You don't have to be a gourmet cook to produce eye-appealing, tasty and healthy meals!

Chicken Pot Pie

2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken thighs
1 medium carrot, diced
4 celery stalks, diced
1 large yellow onion, diced
1 Tbsp. minced fresh garlic
2 Tbsp. soup base (vegetable or chicken)
1 Tbsp. dried thyme
2 tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. dried rubbed sage, basil, and parsley
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
4 cups heavy cream
2 cups water
1 large unpeeled Russet potato, diced
1 cup corn kernels
Pastry crust (optional)

Put chicken thighs in heavy stockpot and saute until cooked all the way through. It will begin to shred at this point. Add the carrots, celery, onion, and garlic. Saute until carrots are tender. Add the soup base, thyme, oregano, basil, sage, parsley, salt, and pepper. Cook until fragrant.

Add the flour and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring often. Add the cream, water, potatoes, and corn to the pot. Cook until a fork goes through the potatoes without resistance. The starch in the potatoes and the flour will thicken the mixture. If you want a really thick filling, add more flour.

Put chicken mixture into a pie pan or other baking dish. Cover with single pie crust or puff pastry. Seal the edges. Heat at 350 degrees. (You can also serve the filling over biscuits that have been heated according to directions.)
